Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the goals scored during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations football tournament in Morocco by examining the methods of scoring, timing of goals, scoring zones, and body parts used to score goals. In addition, the study sought to determine the relative importance of each indicator within the total number of goals scored.
The study included all participating national teams as the research sample. A descriptive survey method was employed due to its suitability for the nature of the research problem. Data were collected using a standardized pedagogical observation grid. Match video recordings were carefully analyzed, covering all goals scored during the tournament, totaling 121 goals in 52 matches.
The average number of goals scored was 2.33 goals per match, which is higher than in the previous two editions of the tournament. This increase may be attributed to the new competition format as well as favorable climatic conditions. Most goals (75%) were scored from open play. Goal scoring rates were relatively consistent throughout most stages of the matches (from the 16th to the 90th minute). Furthermore, the majority of goals were scored with the right foot (52%), while most goals (62%) were scored from inside the penalty area (16.5 meters).

Sub-Hypotheses
• Certain time periods during the matches witnessed higher goal-scoring rates compared to other periods.
• Most goals during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations were scored from inside the penalty area (16.5 meters).
• Goals resulting from open play represented the most common scoring method during the tournament.
• The right foot was the most frequently used body part for scoring goals during the tournament.
General Objective :
This study aims to identify the technical and tactical characteristics of goals scored during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by analyzing offensive performance indicators related to goal scoring.
Specific Objectives
• Determine the most effective time periods for scoring goals during tournament matches.
• Identify the most frequently used scoring areas on the field.
• Examine the most common methods used to score goals during the tournament.
• Determine the body parts that contributed most to goal scoring.
Research Methodology
The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach using the survey method, as it was considered appropriate for the nature of the research problem. This methodology enabled the description and analysis of the technical characteristics of goals based on objective quantitative data. It is also consistent with methodological trends commonly adopted in football performance analysis research.
Research Instruments and Tools
The researcher relied on several tools and resources to collect data and information. Initially, data were obtained from the official database of the Confederation of African Football (CAF, 2025) through its official website. The primary source of data consisted of video clips of the scored goals, which were downloaded and analyzed using a DELL laptop running Windows 10.
The videos were examined using KMPlayer 64X software, which provides features such as video speed adjustment, screen capture, image extraction, video clipping and editing, and annotation capabilities. These features facilitated accurate documentation and analysis of goals. Finally, a specially designed observation sheet developed using Microsoft Excel 2016 was utilized to record and organize the collected data.
Major Findings
The tournament recorded a total of 121 goals in 52 matches, with an average of 2.33 goals per match. This average is higher than that of the previous edition held in Côte d'Ivoire (2.29 goals per match) and the edition held in Cameroon (1.92 goals per match). This relative increase may be explained by the noticeable development of African football in tactical, physical, and technical aspects.
Regarding match outcomes, the data revealed that the majority of matches ended with a winner. Specifically, 39 matches (75%) produced a decisive result, indicating a relatively lower level of competitive balance compared to previous editions. Conversely, 13 matches (25%) ended in draws, including five matches (10%) that ended in a goalless draw, suggesting limited offensive effectiveness in a small number of matches.
The study concluded that:
• The final 15 minutes of matches represented the period during which the highest number of goals was scored.
• The penalty area was the zone from which the highest number of goals was scored.
• Most goals resulted from open-play situations.
• The right foot was the body part most frequently used for scoring goals.
