Abstract
This study aims to investigate the level of creative writing skills among first-year middle school students in Arabic language classes within the framework of the Competency-Based Approach (CBA), and to examine the influence of demographic variables (gender, father’s educational level, mother’s educational level) on these skills. The researcher employed a descriptive-analytical method and applied a creative writing scale to a sample of 140 students, using statistical techniques such as t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey’s post-hoc test.
The findings revealed that students’ creative writing skills were below the expected average, with a clear dominance of linguistic competence over creativity. The linguistic structure and richness dimension ranked highest, whereas originality and creativity ranked lowest. No statistically significant differences were found regarding gender or mother’s educational level. However, significant differences were observed based on the father’s educational level, in favor of students whose fathers had secondary or university education.
These results suggest that the current implementation of the Competency-Based Approach emphasizes linguistic accuracy more than the development of imagination and creativity. Furthermore, family-related factors, particularly the father’s education, may influence certain aspects of creative writing. The study recommends promoting free writing activities, adopting innovative teaching practices, and addressing individual differences to foster students’ creative thinking.
