This academic study examines the impact of the Ottoman presence on economic life in Algeria, drawing upon the research of historian Nacerddine Saidouni. It highlights Saidouni’s scholarly and intellectual trajectory and his efforts to rewrite Algeria's economic history based on archival records and documents. The study reviews the circumstances of Algeria’s incorporation into the Ottoman Empire, the administrative divisions of the Regency, and the phases of political rule—from the *Beylerbeys* to the *Deys*. It analyzes the land tenure structure within the agricultural sector, detailing diverse ownership patterns such as *Beylik* lands, private holdings, *Arch* (tribal) lands, *Waqf* (endowments), and *Mawat* (dead/uncultivated) lands. Furthermore, it addresses aspects of agricultural and livestock production and the traditional techniques employed, while identifying the natural and human obstacles facing agriculture at the time. The study also highlights the dynamics of industrial activity—encompassing both military sectors (such as shipbuilding and weaponry) and artisanal processing industries (such as textiles, leatherwork, food processing, and crafts)—as well as the organization of domestic and foreign trade, the state of the trade balance, and the sources of public treasury revenue, including the taxation system. Finally, it examines the monetary system and the multiplicity of currencies in circulation, affirming the success of Saidouni’s works in presenting a comprehensive perspective that deconstructs colonial narratives regarding Algeria prior to 1830.
