Abstract

Summary Political and economic relations between the Regency of Algiers and the Austrian Empire during the Ottoman period witnessed significant development. These relations were shaped by the political and strategic changes that characterized the Mediterranean basin, particularly in the context of European competition for maritime dominance and the protection of commercial interests. Initially, the relationship was marked by tension due to attacks carried out by the Algerian fleet against Austrian vessels. This prompted the Austrian Empire to adopt a diplomatic approach based on concluding treaties and agreements with the Regency of Algiers in order to secure maritime navigation and safeguard its commercial interests. Over time, these agreements contributed to establishing a degree of stability and regulating relations between the two sides, making Algerian–Austrian relations a notable example of political, diplomatic, and economic interaction between the Regency of Algiers and a European power during the Ottoman era. Keywords: Regency of Algiers; Austrian Empire; Ottoman period; Mediterranean Sea; treaties; maritime trade; political relations; European rivalry
