Abstract
This study, entitled **"Islam and Authority in the Thought of Wajih Kawtharani,"** seeks to explore the relationship between religion and political authority in Arab-Islamic thought through an examination of the intellectual project of the historian and thinker Wajih Kawtharani. The study analyzes his intellectual background and his critical historical approach, while also addressing the concept of authority in classical Islamic thought through the notions of the caliphate, legitimacy, and obedience as developed by prominent Muslim scholars. Furthermore, it examines Kawtharani's interpretation of the Ottoman experience, highlighting the use of religious discourse in legitimizing political power and the limits of traditional jurisprudence in responding to political realities. The study also discusses his critical perspective on contemporary political Islam, democracy, and the complex relationship between religion and the modern state, emphasizing the need for an epistemological distinction between the religious and political spheres. The findings reveal that Kawtharani's intellectual project represents a serious attempt to reinterpret the Islamic political heritage through a critical historical perspective, free from both idealization and exclusion, thereby contributing to the development of a contemporary Arab political consciousness grounded in citizenship, democracy, and rationality.
