Abstract: This research aims to study the rural sphere in Algeria during the Ottoman period by highlighting the governance and control mechanisms adopted by the Ottoman authorities to manage and regulate rural areas, focusing on the Makhzen and Mahalla systems, as well as the role of tribes within the state’s administrative and military structure. It also examines the nature of the relationship between the central authority and rural tribes, in addition to the major uprisings that occurred in the Algerian countryside, their causes, and the methods used to contain them. The study adopts both the historical method and the descriptive-analytical approach through the examination of historical sources and specialized references, as well as the analysis of the political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions related to the rural sphere during the Ottoman period. The findings show that the Ottoman authority relied on the Makhzen system as a mechanism of indirect rule, based on a network of allied tribes that contributed to maintaining security, collecting taxes, and ensuring the loyalty of the population, The Mahalla also served as an effective instrument for consolidating the authority of the Beylik and controlling rural areas, Moreover, the study demonstrates that rural uprisings resulted from the interaction of political, economic, and social factors, particularly those related to taxation and administrative pressures, and that the authorities responded using a combination of military force, tribal mediation, and political accommodation. The study also highlights the important role of zawiyas and Sufi orders in rural life through their religious, educational, and social functions, contributing to stability and balance within rural society.
