Abstract

Summary:
The components of the Algerian economy diversified and multiplied during the Ottoman era, representing a vital source of income for Algeria during that period thanks to various activities. Livestock wealth, along with diverse agricultural products that varied according to the type of land ownership, formed the most important economic pillar for Ottoman Algeria, supporting all other economic sectors. Concurrently, the industrial sector witnessed noticeable diversification and growth, particularly the handicraft and textile industries, which flourished across the Regency's cities and rural areas, with diversified products driven by the abundance of requisite raw materials. These two sectors (agricultural and industrial) contributed to stimulating the commercial sector, serving as another source of income for the Regency. Consequently, Algeria competed with European and Eastern products, leading to an increase in its markets. On the other hand, the Ottoman authority imposed a set of taxes on the aforementioned economic sectors to finance the state treasury. Furthermore, Algerian maritime revenues contributed to the prosperity of the economy and were closely linked to it, especially after the formation of a powerful naval fleet that established its dominance in the Mediterranean Sea. This prompted European countries to establish peaceful relations with Algeria to secure their interests through the payment of annual tributes, maritime spoils, and other means.
