Abstract This study examines the attitudes of social workers in Algeria towards the press coverage of child abduction, a phenomenon that has escalated markedly in recent years and generated serious security and social anxiety within Algerian families and society at large. The study was conducted at the Department of Sociology, Mohamed Boudiaf University, M'sila, on a purposive sample of forty-six social work specialists during the period October 2025 to April 2026. A semi-structured questionnaire and guided interview were employed as primary data-collection instruments, within a descriptive-analytical framework. Findings reveal that social workers hold markedly critical attitudes toward newspaper treatment of this phenomenon: the majority perceive Algerian press coverage as dominated by security and news-event framing at the expense of deep social analysis, and consider the overall level of objectivity insufficient relative to the sensitivity of the topic. Attitudes were, however, positive regarding the press's potential awareness-raising role and its capacity to mobilise community-level responses to abduction risks. The study concludes with a set of practical recommendations aimed at reorienting media treatment toward preventive, analytical, and ethically grounded coverage that genuinely serves child protection rather than merely reporting incidents. Keywords: Attitudes, Social worker, Press coverage, Child abduction, Algerian press. | |
