Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the nature of Algerian-French relations during the reign of Dey Hussein (1818–1830 AD), as it was the decisive stage that witnessed the transition of the relationship between the two parties from commercial cooperation to political and military conflict that ended with the French occupation of Algeria in 1830 AD. The study focused on tracking the development of these relations through their economic, diplomatic and military dimensions, highlighting the factors that contributed to the exacerbation of tension between the two sides. The study also adopted the historical analytical approach, as it is most appropriate for understanding the sequence of events and explaining the transformations that took place in relations between Algeria and France at this delicate stage, by relying on historical sources and academic studies that dealt with the subject. The study concluded that Algerian-French relations during the reign of Dey Hussein were not merely passing diplomatic disputes, but rather an expression of an unequal conflict between a sovereign state seeking to maintain its independence and international standing, and a rising colonial power that exploited economic and political crises to realize its expansionist project in Algeria.
