Abstract

Summary: The world is currently witnessing a digital revolution that has upended all economic balances, perhaps most notably in the form of digital currencies, which have spread and established themselves alongside other forms of currency. Since flexibility is one of the most important characteristics of Islamic law and its ability to adapt to new developments, there is a need to study these currencies in all their various forms and characteristics. This, of course, does not stop at determining their legal status—whether permissible or prohibited—but must also include regulating the transactions arising from them, such as speculation, and how to fulfill the obligations related to them, such as zakat, in order to preserve financial transactions and the objectives of Sharia (preservation of wealth). Thus, we have answered our research question, which was: the reality of digital currencies, their classification, and their ruling in Islamic jurisprudence. The study concluded that these currencies are classified as private money, as they fulfill some of the functions of money, such as being accepted in certain circles as a medium of exchange, as well as the acceptance they have gained; and based on this, zakat is obligatory on them. Keywords: Digital currencies, classification of currencies, zakat on currencies.
