Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to clarify the impact of digital platforms, particularly Facebook, on shaping the journalistic identity of media and communication students. Within this framework, the study addresses the following main question: How does Facebook use influence the development of journalistic identity among media and communication students at the University of M'sila? To answer this question and achieve the study's objectives, a survey methodology was employed, utilizing a questionnaire as the primary data collection tool, supplemented by field observation. The study included a sample of 52 male and female students from the Media and Communication Department at Mohamed Boudiaf University in M'sila, equally divided between males and females, with the majority enrolled in Master's and postgraduate programs. Theoretically, the study adopted the Uses and Gratifications Theory to interpret its findings, as it is considered the most appropriate scientific framework for understanding the students' motivations in choosing this platform to achieve their professional goals and meet their training needs. The study yielded several field findings, most notably: a growing awareness among students of the professional importance of Facebook, with 71% of them using it to publish journalistic content (news, reports, opinions) that reflects their professional identity. As a result of this awareness, students adopted a selective approach focused on the quality of journalistic content and the use of multimedia (photos and videos) rather than indiscriminate and excessive posting. Furthermore, the majority (84%) affirmed that Facebook is an effective tool for building journalistic identity, and 82% considered it a suitable space for continuous training and self-learning. The results also showed that the platform helps overcome the control of "gatekeepers" in traditional institutions by enabling students to engage directly and freely in actual journalistic practice. In conclusion, Facebook plays a significant role in students' self-marketing and personal branding, helping them cultivate a positive public image and opening new horizons for their careers.
