Abstract

Abstract The “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation constitutes one of the most pivotal political, military, and media events in recent years regarding the Palestinian question, as it introduced profound transformations in the dynamics of the Palestinian–Israeli conflict and was accompanied by extensive media coverage and intensive communicative practices by the various actors involved. Within this context, the discourse of Abu Ubaida emerged as a central resistant media narrative, distinguished by its linguistic and symbolic force, psychological and mobilizing impact, and reliance on religious, historical, and political dimensions that contributed to shaping the image of Palestinian resistance in the global media sphere. Recognizing the growing importance of media discourse in the management of contemporary conflicts, this study—entitled “Discourse Analysis of Hamas’s Military Spokesman during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation”—aims to examine the semantic and semiological structures of Abu Ubaida’s speeches delivered between 2023 and 2025. It seeks to uncover the communicative and persuasive mechanisms employed in constructing a resistant discourse capable of influencing audiences and directing public opinion. The study further investigates the nature of the media messages embedded in the discourse, and the ways in which language, symbols, and religious and historical references were mobilized to consolidate the Palestinian narrative in opposition to competing accounts. The significance of this research lies in its treatment of resistant discourse as a comprehensive media and communicative phenomenon that transcends traditional news reporting, extending into psychological, political, cultural, and symbolic dimensions. Abu Ubaida’s discourse during the Al-Aqsa Flood was not limited to the transmission of military information or field updates; rather, it represented an advanced model of media and psychological warfare, grounded in deliberate strategies of persuasion, influence, and image construction. His discourse succeeded in asserting a strong presence across mainstream media and digital platforms, becoming a decisive factor in shaping political and media debates surrounding the war. Methodologically, the study employed the descriptive-analytical approach as most appropriate for examining media and discursive phenomena, supplemented by discourse analysis to reveal linguistic and semantic dimensions, and semiological analysis to interpret the symbols, signs, and references embedded in resistant discourse. A purposive sample of nine speeches by Abu Ubaida was selected, distributed across three temporal phases between 2023 and 2025, in order to trace the evolution and transformation of resistant discourse in response to shifting political, military, and media contexts. The study addressed several core questions: What semantic and semiological features characterize Abu Ubaida’s discourse during the Al-Aqsa Flood? How were religious, historical, and civilizational references employed in constructing his media narrative? What persuasive and influential strategies were adopted in addressing internal and external audiences? To what extent did this discourse contribute to reinforcing the Palestinian narrative and shaping international public opinion? The research was structured into two principal chapters. The first chapter outlined the theoretical framework of media discourse analysis, discussing the concept and historical development of discourse, the characteristics and functions of media discourse, and strategies of influence and persuasion through language. It emphasized that media discourse constitutes a central instrument in shaping collective consciousness, producing meaning, and influencing audience orientations, particularly during crises and wars. The second chapter examined the semantic and semiological structure of resistant discourse in the Al-Aqsa Flood operation. It explored the conceptual and historical foundations of resistant discourse, its political and media functions, and the nature of its intended audiences. Special attention was given to religious and civilizational references, including Qur’anic verses, religious vocabulary, and historical and national symbols, as well as the broader civilizational and historical dimensions of the Palestinian cause. The chapter also analyzed the semiological aspects of symbols and signs, revealing their political, cultural, and psychological connotations, alongside the mobilizing and motivational language that constituted the semantic structure of the discourse. The findings demonstrate that Abu Ubaida’s discourse represented a comprehensive model of resistant media communication, integrating informational, psychological, and political functions. It exhibited a high capacity to employ religious, historical, and cultural symbols in constructing an influential narrative that generated wide public engagement within Palestinian and Arab societies, while asserting the Palestinian narrative in the international media arena. The study concludes that resistant discourse during the Al-Aqsa Flood served as a strategic instrument for managing media and psychological conflict, reinforcing the image of resistance, and reshaping awareness of the Palestinian cause regionally and internationally. Ultimately, the study affirms that analyzing resistant media discourse provides a fundamental entry point for understanding the nature of contemporary conflict, which is no longer confined to military confrontation but has evolved into a struggle over meanings, symbols, and media narratives—where language, imagery, and symbolism play a decisive role in directing public opinion and producing political and media influence.
