Abstract

Abstract
This study examines the economic and commercial structures of the Western Baylik (province) of Algeria during the Ottoman period (1518-1830), as a model for studying economic systems in Ottoman Maghreb territories. The research aims to analyze the characteristics of the economic and commercial organization of the Baylik, reveal the mechanisms of internal and external trade exchange that it developed, and study its commercial relations with its regional and Mediterranean environment, through a historical analytical methodology that combines descriptive, statistical, and comparative approaches. The study showed that the Western Baylik was distinguished by a unique strategic location that made it a meeting point between northern, southern, eastern, and western trade routes. It developed an integrated economic system combining internal trade through a diverse network of markets (urban, weekly, seasonal) and external trade through its main ports (Oran, Arzew, Mostaganem). The study also revealed the diversity of traded goods and merchant classes, and highlighted the role of trade relations in creating economic integration and social balance between cities and rural areas. It demonstrated that the Baylik's trade system was dynamic and adaptable to regional and international changes despite the challenges it faced. The study concluded that the Western Baylik formed a unique model of interaction between local economic structures and external influences, embodying the ability of Ottoman territories to develop distinctive economic systems responsive to their geographical and social characteristics, while integrating into the broader economic system of the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean region.
