Abstract

Abstract: The 1958 Lebanon Crisis constituted a pivotal turning point in the history of modern Lebanon, reflecting the interplay between domestic political and sectarian factors and regional and international developments. The crisis intensified as a result of President Camille Chamoun’s efforts to amend the Constitution in a manner that would allow him to extend his presidential term, alongside opposition allegations of interference in the 1957 parliamentary elections and the escalation of political and sectarian tensions. Externally, Chamoun’s alignment with the Western camp and his support for the Eisenhower Doctrine, coinciding with the establishment of the United Arab Republic in 1958, contributed to deepening internal divisions and increasing the influence of Nasserism. The crisis reached its peak following the assassination of opposition journalist Nassib al-Matni on 8 May 1958, transforming the confrontation into an armed conflict between the government and opposition forces, which extended their influence over large areas of the country. On 15 July 1958, the United States intervened militarily through Operation Blue Bat in support of the Chamoun government; however, the intervention did not result in a political resolution of the crisis. The confrontation ultimately ended with a political settlement that led to the election of General Fouad Chehab as President of the Republic, within a consensus expressed through the principle of “No victor, no vanquished.” The crisis thus represented a temporary settlement of the conflict without definitively eliminating the political and sectarian tensions that continued to shape Lebanese political life in subsequent years.
