Abstract

Abstract This study examines the topic of Maghrebi elites and their toward Pan-Islamism during the period 1900–1919, by analyzing the interaction of elites in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya with this idea in the context of expanding European colonialism and the decline of the Ottoman Empire. The study aims to identify the nature of Maghrebi elites, define their positions toward Pan-Islamism, and reveal the impact of this idea on reformist and resistance movements at the beginning of the twentieth century. The study also concludes that Pan-Islamism had a clear impact on stimulating Islamic reformist thought, spreading unifying awareness, and mobilizing Maghrebi peoples against colonialism, especially through scholars, the press, educational institutions, and scholarly journeys. However, this influence remained limited in practical political terms because of the imbalance of power, the decline of the Ottoman role, and the rise of nationalist trends after World War I. Therefore, Pan-Islamism represented an important factor in shaping reformist and national consciousness in the Arab Maghreb, despite its later decline as a comprehensive political project. Keywords: Pan-Islamism, Maghrebi elites, Arab Maghreb, Islamic reform, colonialism, Ottoman Caliphate, resistance, national movement.
