Abstract
This study examines the problematic of war and peace in Jean-Paul Sartre’s philosophy as an issue closely related to the concepts of freedom, responsibility, and historical commitment. It highlights that Sartre’s political stance developed through a critical engagement with the Communist Party and Marxist thought, without formal affiliation. He regarded Marxism as a necessary analytical framework for understanding social reality, while maintaining the centrality of human subjectivity and rejecting determinism.
For Sartre, war is not merely a military confrontation, but the result ofstructures of domination, colonialism, and structural violence.Within this perspective, the revolutionary project emerges as a historical option for human liberation and social transformation. The concept of the revolutionary human being occupies a central position, defined as a free agent aware of choices and responsible for actions.
Peace, in Sartre’s view, can only be achieved through the elimination ofinjustice and the realization of justice and liberation. Therefore, he supported liberation movements and considered resistance to colonialism a prerequisite for a just peace. His intellectual positions contributed to redefining the role of theintellectual as an engaged actor in society. The study concludes that war and peacein Sartre’s thought constitute two dialectical dimensions grounded in freedom, justice, and human responsibility.
