Abstract
The present study aimed to explore the characteristics of emotion regulation and the level of alexithymia among adolescents with obesity. To achieve this objective, a clinical approach based on the case study method was adopted. The study was conducted on an available sample consisting of two obese adolescents, aged 15 and 19 years, who were enrolled in the "Hadhna Gym" sports club in M'Sila.
Data were collected through a semi-structured clinical interview, in addition to the administration of two scales: the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) developed by Gross and John, and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20).
The findings revealed that obese adolescents experience difficulties in emotional awareness, reflected in a reduced ability to identify, distinguish, and verbally describe their emotions, as well as a tendency toward externally oriented thinking. The results also indicated difficulties in emotion regulation, characterized by the use of maladaptive strategies such as emotional suppression, expressive suppression, and avoidance behaviors when coping with psychological stress. These difficulties were associated with lower self-esteem and a distorted body image.
