Abstract

Exam anxiety is an emotional psychological state that manifests in students during assessment and examination situations. It is widely prevalent among Baccalaureate students due to the high-stakes nature of this exam, leading to psychological pressures that manifest as physical symptoms and psychosomatic disorders, affecting their psychological balance and academic performance. The present study aimed to investigate the role of exam anxiety in the emergence of psychosomatic disorders, specifically Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), among Baccalaureate students, through a clinical study of three cases in the Wilaya of M'Sila. We employed the clinical method, which aligns with the nature of our research. The study was conducted on a sample of three cases from two different secondary schools in M'Sila. The tools used included clinical observation, semi-structured interviews, the Sarason Test for Exam Anxiety (comprising 38 items across three dimensions), and a psychosomatic symptom checklist specifically for IBS. The study reached the following results: - The cognitive dimension of exam anxiety contributes to the emergence of psychosomatic disorders among Baccalaureate students. - The emotional dimension of exam anxiety is associated with the onset and exacerbation of IBS symptoms in Baccalaureate students. - Physiological symptoms associated with exam anxiety negatively impact the academic achievement of some Baccalaureate students. - There is a clear correlation between high levels of exam anxiety and the appearance of psychosomatic disorders, particularly IBS symptoms. - The intensity of the impact of exam anxiety on psychological, physical, and academic aspects varies from one student to another.
